Flashback Friday

β€”

,

Ah yes, this was my moment in the sun. Or rather, my moment in the dark; close to the Winter Solstice. But I’m totally cool with that. This was the year I first sat on a floor in a recreation room of a church to string popcorn and cranberries together as a Cadette Girl Scout. Later, we would appear in person at this local event to join in the festivities with a sing-along and tree-trimming.

It’s funny because I remember the prep work, but I have no recollection of posing in this photo. It’s not a secret that I was a bit of a ham, so it’s possible they picked me because I raised my hand yelling β€œpick me!”

I’m wearing braces, so I’m 13 which means that it is 1973. Upon closer examination, I realize that I’m wearing my favorite pair of bell bottoms which had whales on them mixed with some paisley accents. Could they scream more 70’s fashion if I tried? (It is tough to see in a black and white photo, but you can make out the shape of two or three whales.)

The copy accompanying the photo captured all the detail, but I’m also sharing it below:

β€œPlacing a string of popcorn and cranberries on the living Christmas tree in the mall at Cedar and Lee roads, Cleveland Heights, Thursday evening, was Melanie Vanderhoff, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 294. The tree decorating was part of the kick-off for the holiday season sponsored by Cedar-Lee merchants and neighborhood groups.”

If Cleveland Heights is ringing a bell, it was the hometown of current football mega star brothers, Jason and Travis Kelce. Their parents still live there. The brothers play for the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs respectively. Jason is known for the documentary β€œKelce” showing on Prime and Travis is known for dating um, Taylor Swift. (Hey, anytime I can reference Taylor Swift for a little extra exposure, I’m going to do it.) They also have a popular podcast name β€œNew Heights.” It is a name which pays homage to where they grew up. Personally, I love that they love Cleveland Heights and it feels like an equal character in their story. But, I digress.

Since it is December 1st, it felt like this was a perfect moment to post and do my own version of a kick off to Christmas and holiday themes. Plus, I really wanted to unveil those pants.

The feature photo and copy capture the seasonal moment, but like in so many local cover stories where reporters rush in and out, they managed to spell my last name wrong. I never did demand a printed correction. For the record, it’s Vanderhoof. Happy December!

  1. Of course, photos can talk and they do. You’ve do an expert job of giving voice to this Christmasy snapshot from long ago. The trivia is nice too. Who doesn’t know that Travis Kelce looms large in the news these days. His memory may fade, but yours will not because you have preserved here on your blog.

Thanks for getting us into the Christmas spirit, Miss Vanderhoof!

    1. You’re welcome Miss Longenecker! :) I really do cherish this time of year. This photo fell into my lap a few months ago and seemed to be the perfect segue to the holidays. Plus, it’s true that I am recognizing more and more the value of preserving family stories and photos here. Thanks Marian!

As a huge football fan, I’ve known about the Kelce brothers for years. It’s quite interesting to me how the Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift connection has lead to an increase in female fans. The brothers play on two of the top teams in the league and faced off in last year’s Super Bowl. I wonder what that is like for their parents. I once went to a college basketball game in Hawaii (The Maui Classic.) Notre Dame was playing North Carolina and there were brothers on each team. I sat near their father who had a split hat with both teams represented on one side of the hat.

You were a celebrity way back in the day.

    1. I was a Chicago Bears fan in the 80s and 90s. Now I can’t watch them if I wanted to because we moved out of state. The NFL is THRILLED with the Taylor Swift phenomenon!!! And in terms of the brothers, I feel a kinship with them and love seeing them touting our town.

We’ve got something else in common, Melanie. I was a big Bears fan. I think the Bears defense in 1985 was as good as any I’ve ever seen.

  3. What a great photo Melanie! Your face truly shows your love of all things Christmas. πŸŽ„ You’re rocking those 70’s pants! I too was a huge fan of paisley back in the day! This is a wonderful tribute to you and your hometown and those equally as famous NFL players πŸ˜ƒ!

    1. Hahaha, thanks Pam. I just thought that I would share a photo and a few laughs too. I also love your word “equally”, lol. I’m going to have to start dating the Golden Bachelor for a little more press to catch up to the big guys!
