Remembering Friends

β€”

,

Didn’t I just write that I was taking a summer sabbatical? I did. But I also included a caveat that if there was a story which wouldn’t keep quiet in my head, I would post it.

As it turns out, it is literally something which can’t keep quiet because it is a podcast. Today, the story is presented in audio (and video too), which is fun and original to this blog.

Thanks to Mr. Springer, I was recently introduced to two smart, warm, powerful and funny women named Dr. Vicki Atkinson and Wynne Leon. After that introduction, I searched online for more information about them and I sure found it through their books: Surviving Sue by Atkinson and Finding My Father’s Faith by Leon.

In Vicki’s book, Sue was Vicki’s mother who battled alcohol, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, depression and Munchausen’s. Some of her stories are shocking to envision. She tells them straight-up and honestly. She holds a doctorate degree in adult education, is a licensed professional counselor, author, blogger and is a consultant in her own business, Atkinson Group Solutions.

In Wynne’s book, she tells two tales; her father’s faith and ministry interwoven with her own unique life of climbing mountains around the world, running her own business and discovering the joy of meditation. She is her own woman who chose to have children at age 46 and 50 and holds a degree in electrical engineering.  She also writes technical computer manuals, articles about meditation and parenting.

Like I said, two powerful women. And they came together out of a real love for storytelling which became Sharing the Heart of The Matter.

Given that this was my first podcast, I considered discussing a post that would spark thoughtful conversation (bigger picture stories) but personal stories resonate (and are better for storytelling) so I decided to share Saving Lissa which appeared here as a written story three years ago; so it is new to many. In in terms of audio and video, it is new to all!

This first link takes you to the actual Sharing the Heart of The Matter podcast which is audio only and includes a full version with conversation included after the story. It’s easy to spot episode 74 right now at the top, but it will stay chronological. (By the way, I also have to remember to ask Vicki or Wynne the origin of the podcast name. I keep thinking about the Don Henley song!)

This is the video portion where I share the story (no post conversation) and is a cool addition they like to include on their blogs. I hope you will be drawn in to this new experience here!

    1. Good morning Vicki! I enjoyed my time with you and Wynne so much, I very much wanted to shine a light on your podcast and your books as well which I read. They both resonated with me. Writing a post to share your story-telling (in both forms) was the easiest thing in the world to do! :) I’m so glad you like it. I’m just telling the truth here! Big hugs to you as well. β™₯

  2. I enjoyed the podcast as I ate a late breakfast, having fasted before lab work this morning. Authors, like you, become more real when we not only see faces but hear voice expression and inflection. You did a fantastic job, Melanie!

Thank you for interrupting your hiatus to deliver this powerful message of resilience and hope. Once again, I marvel at the connections blogging makes possible: Pete Springer–> You–> Dr. Vicki and Wynne Leon. I definitely echo the words of Victoria, “You write with ease and with so much heart.” Brava to all participants here! :-D

    1. Hi Marian! I just want to start with my hope that all goes well with your lab work. β™₯ I really appreciate you listening in today and your warm appraisal of my visual story. Even though it was a little layered with different periods of time and a reporter’s story, Lissa’s words are the best part and bring it all together (which is no surprise!) Her message is important and completely relevant even 11 years later. Her grace in life was unbelievable. She will always be a role model! And that’s so right about Pete! There are wonderful ripples everywhere that make this world we’re in so enjoyable.

As promised, I sent your podcast to my goddaughter. I know she’s terribly busy in her third year of medical school, but I thought it was important for her to hear about Lissa’s story. While we obviously want our medical people to be educated about medicine, empathy and compassion are equally critical qualities. Fortunately, I know she already understands that.

I had no idea what I was doing when I started blogging over five years ago. (I started on a whim just to see if I could create a simple website.) The other thing I was equally clueless about was that I would make so many wonderful blogging friends. Everyone has stories to tell in their individual waysβ€”so fascinating. I’m so glad to have met you and glad to help connect others in the same way people did for me. “Pay it forward” is more than a nice saying; it’s a way of life.

    1. Yes! Our blogging community is second to none in paying it forward, Pete. You are a shining example of that and Sally Cronin comes to mind too, which, in fact, it was her site where we first met! :) And I told you before that I am thrilled you sent on Lissa’s story to a soon-to-be doctor. I can’t tell you how much that means to me. I also forgot to mention in my response on the podcast page that I’m so glad you chuckled over the mom moment when she saw the tattoo for the first time. OMG, it was priceless! Hahahahaha. I also loved to hear that Vicki had one too! Oh, the things that come out in a conversation. :) Thanks Pete.

  4. Oh, Melanie — I love the way that you connect the dots about how we are all connected! Thank you so much for your kind words. It was such a pleasure to talk with you. Your stories are powerful and beautifully told. Like you said in the podcast, life rarely works out as planned – but often it works out even better. Meeting you is a great example! Thank you for this lovely post!

    1. Thanks so much Wynne for ALL your help on EVERYTHING! It was a huge joy to meet you and Vicki – you two are so much fun and easy to hang out with! :) Yes, Lissa’s words are really sticking with people about life and it not working out as planned, but would we want that? Although she said “I will think on that,” she already had her answer…there would be way too many missed possibilities. And I agree with her. Thank you!

  6. Hi Melonie,

Loved the podcast and found myself nodding knowingly and laughing. So much fun. I just had 2 dogs chasing mean for the first time I screamed in my dream. I thought that was major progress since I normally can’t. Great to connect here. ❀️

    1. That is too funny, Cindy! (Although being chased can be scary too. ) I’m wondering if you were doing a little lucid dreaming by telling yourself to scream…and you did! That’s very cool. Thanks so much for listening in and for your comment. :)
